MVD Change of Address for Residents Moving Within New Mexico

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division requires a change of address for your driver's license and New Mexico vehicle registration. You can change your address online or fill out a New Mexico MVD Change of Address request. You must provide a few pieces of information for a change of address New Mexico:

• Your current driver's license number
• Your Social Security Number
• The vehicle information listed on your title, including the plate number, vehicle number, make, and year of your vehicle
• Your new and old addresses

If you fill out a change of address form, you can mail it to the MVD Data Entry Unit. The mailing address for the MVD Data Entry Unit is P.O. Box 630, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 87504-0630.

When you change your address online or in a form, you can ask the NM MVD to update your voter registration information. You do not need to contact the Secretary of State's office to change your address if you do so. If you currently hold a New Mexico driver's license, you do not need to do anything else. It is free to change your address, and you do not need to hand in your current driver's license. The same form will also change your address on your New Mexico vehicle registration records, so you don't need to fill out another document.

You can order a driver's license with your new address on it. It costs $18 to replace a four-year license and $34 to replace an eight-year license. To get a new license, you must visit an NM MVD office, fill out a paper form, and have a new picture taken.

NM MVD Change of Address and Driver's License for New Residents

All people moving into New Mexico from another state must get a New Mexico driver's license within 60 days. You cannot change your address online, and you must visit an MVD office to get a new license. MVD offices are in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and cities near Albuquerque like Los Alamos and Pecos. To get a new driver's license that can also serve as a REAL ID, you need:

• Your out-of-state driver's license
• One proof of your lawful identity and age, such as your birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card
• One proof of your Social Security Number, such as your Social Security card, a W2 form, or a paystub
• Two proofs of residency with your name and a physical New Mexico address, such as a utility bill, a bank statement, a paystub, an insurance bill, or a document from a local government attesting to your New Mexico residency

All documents you provide must be originals. The NM MVD will not accept photocopies or photos of your documents. You will surrender your out-of-state license during your NM MVD appointment.

You must pass a vision test, but you do not need a driving test if your license is valid and current. You must pay $15 for a DWI records check, and you also need to pay $18 for a four-year license and $34 for an eight-year license. If you pass your records check, you'll receive a temporary paper license you can use until you get your card in the mail.

New Mexico Vehicle Registration for New Residents

New New Mexico residents are required to register their vehicles with the NM MVD within 30 days of establishing residency. You must visit an NM MVD field office to register your vehicle. You may be able to get a new driver's license and register your car in the same visit, but your New Mexico DMV visit can take a long time.

If you're registering a new vehicle, you need:

• The original copy of the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO)
• The original copy or a certified copy of the Purchase Agreement or Dealer's Invoice
• An odometer statement, which can be the odometer mileage statement on the back of your MCO, Odometer Mileage Statement (MVD Form 10187), and Application for Title and Registration (MVD Form 10002)
• Proof of insurance, with a minimum of $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person, $50,000 for bodily injury or death of multiple people, and $10,000 for property damage in one accident, which you can establish through your auto insurance card or a copy of your auto insurance policy
• Two proofs of your New Mexico residency
• One proof of your identity

Registration fees range from $27 to $62 for a one-year New Mexico car registration and $54 to $124 for a two-year New Mexico car registration. If your new car is from another state, the NM MVD will conduct a VIN inspection.

If you're registering a used vehicle, you need:

• The Certificate of Title
• An odometer statement, which can be the Assignment of Title section on the back of your Certificate of Title Bill of Sale (MVD Form 10009), Odometer Disclosure Statement (MVD Form 10187), and Application for Vehicle Title and Registration (MVD Form 10002)
• Proof of insurance, with the same requirements as proof of insurance for a new vehicle
• Two proofs of New Mexico residency
• One proof of your identity

The same registration fees apply for registering a used vehicle. There are a few special conditions where you need additional documents. Residents of Bernalillo County must present an Emission Certificate of Inspection.

United States Postal Service Change of Address

You can change your mailing address with the Postal Service at any point. However, you should do so as soon as possible to receive important documents. You can change your address using the Official USPS Change of Address website, without needing to visit a USPS office. You need to verify your identity online and pay a $1.25 fee. You can change your address with the New Mexico Secretary of State using the USPS change of address website.

If you can't verify your identity, you need to visit a USPS office with proof of your identity, including a photo ID. You must fill out PS Form 3575, which you can get at the USPS office.

Once you've made a New Mexico change of address with the USPS, they will forward your mail to your new address for 12 months. You need to perform a New Mexico change of address with the organizations sending you mail in order to keep receiving their mail after 12 months.

New residents to New Mexico can perform a New Mexico change of address in the same ways as people moving within New Mexico. If you're moving your business to New Mexico, you need to fill out the Business Tax Registration Application and Update (Form ACD-31015) instead of Form RPD-41260 to perform a change of address New Mexico.

IRS Change of Address

You can perform a New Mexico change of address with the IRS in a few ways, whether you're moving within New Mexico or moving to New Mexico:

• Send a signed written statement to the IRS with your full name, old and new addresses, and Social Security Number

The IRS may need up to six weeks to process your IRS change of address, so don't panic if you don't receive government checks immediately.

Utilities Change of Address

You need to contact each of your utility companies individually to perform a New Mexico change of address. Major New Mexico utility providers like New Mexico Water and Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) have pages on their websites that let you change your services online.
